The Japanese title クラウン is written in katakana syllabary (A form of Japanese writing). It is used especially for transcription of foreign languages into Japa- nese. クラウン is the word for both clown and crown.

In the installation there is a clown nose and a crown placed on the floor in-bet- ween two speakers . From the speakers there are sounds of an English lesson. The English teacher explains how to pronounce L and R to the students from east Asia with the examples of clown and crown.

Teacher: Repeat after me! Crown Clown Crown Clown.
Students: クラウン クラウン クラウン クラウン

Due to the difficulty in pronunciation, the two different instances clown and crown become closer and closer until they are symbiotic, where one cannot make out one from the other.

2つのサウンドスピーカーの間に道化の鼻と王冠がおいてあり、スピーカーから英語の先生 が学生に英語を教えている場面が流れています。英語の先生はClownとCrownを例題に、L とRの発音の違いをアジアの学生に教えています。

先生が”Repeat after me! Crown Clown Crown Clown” と言うと、学生が “クラウンクラウ ン ク ラ ウ ン ク ラ ウ ン ” と 繰 り 返 し ま す 。正 し く 発 音 す る 事 の 難 し さ に よ り 、王 冠 と 道 化 、二 つ の ま っ た く か け 離 れ た 存 在 が 、判 別 で き な い ほ ど 重 な っ て い き ま す 。
